It is at this time, we celebrate the life journey of Maryella Atonwentsine (Laughing) Chubb, Turtle Clan to the Sky World. On October 1, 2019, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother chose to re-unite with family and friends-past in love and light with our Creator. She fought a courageous battle with cancer with the support of her loving family and came to rest peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones.

Maryella was born on December 29, 1942 at home to her parents, Louis and Katherine (Leaf) Laughing, during a massive ice storm/blizzard. Dr. Gorman had to travel to her birth home in a horse and buggy to deliver her, as the snow was too deep to drive his car. She attended school in Bombay, NY and Mater Dei College.

For ten years, Maryella worked as a medical transport driver for Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. Prior, she worked at the St. Regis Mohawk School in Akwesasne in housekeeping. She was a café server at the Turtle Island Café on Kawehnoke where customers loved to converse with her in Mohawk. For three years, she was proud to use her seamstress skills as a seat upholsterer for the Eliminator boat manufacturer where she worked alongside her good friend, Donna Burns. She did factory work at a sugar beet factory in Twin Falls, Idaho. She also worked at Goodyear in Syracuse, NY. Her favorite role was being a homemaker and being G-Ma to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Maryella was well-known for her famous spaghetti. She had to keep getting bigger and bigger pots to make it in, because as soon as someone heard she was making spaghetti, they made sure to get an invite. And everyone was always invited to sit at her table. She loved cooking for her family and friends.

She loved collecting Blue Danube China. Her collection is HUGE! She also loved sewing and making ribbon shirts for her family. She enjoyed watching her Housewives shows, This is Us, Christmas movies on Hallmark, Nascar, and Cowboys or Seahawks football games. She also loved going to the races in Frogtown and lacrosse games, and any sport her grandchildren played in. She loved sending funny and uplifting memes on "the Facebook". She courageously walked with Akwesasne Eagle Watch and was a proud protector of children everywhere and a champion to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was mostly known for her warm, inviting smile and beautiful brown eyes. She loved to meet new friends and always made sure no one was left to feel like they were a stranger in her company.

Maryella was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Katherine Laughing, an infant daughter, Katrina Marie Laughing, and her first husband Carl Bastedo, whom she wed on June 16, 1974 in California. She was also predeceased by her Goddaughter, Lois-Ann Benedict, Aunts, Theresa Sunday, Betty Laughing, Verna Loran, Uncle Richard Peters. She is survived by her loving husband, K. Leo Chubb whom she united in marriage on May 1, 1996 in Fort Covington, NY, her sister Laura Lee (California), sons Lawrence "Happy" (California) and Nicholas and his wife Louise (Georgia), daughters Judy (Rochester, NY), Deanna and her husband Jerry Swamp (Akwesasne), Tara and her husband Thomas Fay (Holland Patent, NY), and many chosen sons and daughters. She is also survived by her grandchildren Tehonwakanerehn, Skehentiioah, Kowahewih, Karahkwenhawi, Aaron (Subuhi), Waubin, Kara, Azul, Amanda (Andrew), Nathan, Ivy, Cameron, Kyle, Talon (Gehri-Lee), Bethany, Trevor, Ryan, Tyler, and many great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Maryella will be laid to rest at her home at 347 Helena Road in Hogansburg. Family and friends may call beginning Wednesday, October 2, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Thursday, October 3rd from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held at her home on Friday, October 4th at 10:00 a.m. followed by a traditional Mohawk Condolence ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate may do so in her memory to Hospice of the North Country, or a cancer organization of their choice. Always be kind, love one another and help one another. Nia:wen.
