SUMMER SAFETY TIPS FROM AMPS
With summer in full swing, police ask “Do you know where your children are?”
Now that school is out for the summer, police say there’s lots that parents should be doing to help keep their kids safe over the next two months. Children need to be reminded about road safety rules. Looking both ways before crossing a road or a street, avoid walking or biking on the roads after dark unless properly equipped with reflective safety clothing and gear, always wear a helmet when riding a bike, scooter, skateboard or an ATV. Wearing a helmet could save your child’s life or prevent them from serious injury.
Another danger is water. Children should never be left unattended in a pool, even for a minute. When camping or hanging out by the river with friends and family always keep a close watchful eye on children playing in or near the river. Smaller children should wear a personal floatation device if playing close to the river or near the shoreline. Accidents happen, even to those who are strong swimmers and they happen quickly.
The SAVE Team would like to remind boaters on the river to ensure your children are wearing personal floatation devices and boat operators shall ensure that their boat is properly equipped with all the standard safety equipment.
Police would also like to warn parents that the dangers to your children don’t only lurk outside your home. This time of the year youth are using the internet more frequently. This is a reminder to make sure you talk to your children about internet safety.
Monitor your youth’s internet usage; know what sites or apps they are using, who they are talking to and where they are in the home while using the internet.
This message is about re-establishing rules to abide by to keep our kids safe this summer. Some of the safety tips may seem like common sense, but it’s important for parents to establish a safety routine every year.
