Salmon River girls lacrosse claims Section 10 title, makes it as far as state regional finals round

The Salmon River Lady Shamrocks claimed the Section 10 championship, moved on and won the state playoffs first round and then lost in regional finals.

On Tuesday, May 28, Salmon River won 9-8 over Canton. It is their first sectional title since 2015. While down 8-6, the Shamrocks scored three goals in the last five minutes of the second half.

Hannah Stevenson opened scoring for Canton just over three minutes into the game. Salmon River came back to score five goals and build a 5-3 lead with just over 8 minutes left in the half. Canton managed two more goals before the intermission buzzer to leave the game tied 5-5 going into the latter stanza. Tied 6-6 at the start of the second half, Canton punched in two more goals to take an 8-6 lead with 11:48 left in the game. With just under five minutes left in regulation, Wynter Jock scored after taking a pass from Paisley Cook. Then with 1:40 left, Jillian Benedict tied the game. With just 44 seconds to go, Cook passed to Meg Martin, who scored what would hold up as the game-winning goal.

Cook tallied two goals and three assists in the Salmon River offensive effort. Kendall Jock (one assist) scored twice. Benedict connected for a pair of goals. Martin had two assists in addition to her game-winning goal. Joryan Adams had one assist. Tiarra Anderson made 14 saves.

Two nights later, the Lady 'Rocks traveled to Vestal and won the opening round of state Class D playoffs against Section 4 champs Chenango Forks.

Salmon River built a 9-4 lead at halftime and went on to win 18-3. Jillian Benedict sparked the SRC offense with five goals and three assists. Jadie Burns scored three goals and had three helpers. Kendall Jock (two assists), Meg Martin (one assist) and Yanenowi Logan scored two goals apiece. Paisley Cook scored once with three assists. Tiarra Anderson had 16 saves.

The Lady Shamrocks played their last game of the season on Saturday, June 1 at Fayetteville-Manlius High School. They lost 15-11 to Class D state champions Skaneateles Lakers from Section 2.

Skaneateles scored eight early goals. Jadie Burns punched in the first SRC marker with a little over 15 minutes left in the first half. Paisley Cook scored again for the Shamrocks with less than two minutes to go in the half. Meg Martin assisted the first goal. Wynter Jock helped set up the second. The Lakers came through with six more goals before the intermission buzzer. Kendall Jock scored their third goal, assisted by Cook. Tiarra Anderson worked the crease for seven saves.

Skaneateles's offense was paced by Riley Brogan and Maggie Newton, with three goals and two assists each. Ioanna Christou, who made three saves, and Meg Buff, who made two, each spent time covering the Lakers' net.
