Salmon River pulls off hockey OT win over Potsdam, Massena downs Potsdam in basketball

Massena and Salmon River’s basketball and hockey teams played teams including Canton, Potsdam, St. Lawrence and Chateaugay over a seven-day span. Here are the results:

Friday, Feb. 1, Massena 75, Potsdam 38 -- Visiting Massena led 38-5 by halftime. Josh Sheets scored a game-high 15 points, including four three-pointers. Alex Rusaw scored 14 points, Tyler Bacon 10, Zach LaBarge eight and Zack Goolden six. Adam Peets and Ethan Firnstein scored five points apiece. Luke Greco scored four. Tyler McDonald and Ryan Herrick scored three each and Spencer Beckstead two. Kobe Phillips, Xavier Moses and Patrick Blanchard scored eight points each for Potsdam.

Friday, Feb. 1, Salmon River 4, Potsdam 3 -- At Fort Covington, Cobie Cree scored the game-winning goal with 49 seconds left in overtime, finishing off a play set up by Carter Benedict and Cameron Cartier. Potsdam built an early 2-0 lead before SRC twice rallied, their second OT win in a week. Jacob Brothers scored the first goal for Potsdam 1:30 in, unassisted. Kevin Beha followed about four minutes later, assisted by Bryan Jones and Dustin Grant. Cartier (assisted by Tim Cook) and Benedict (assisted by Stone Chubb) scored twice in the first five minutes of the middle stanza. Brothers, assisted by Jones, answered. That was followed by a Cartier goal, assisted by Cook, with 1:02 left in the third period. Preston Hemlock made 13 saves for the ‘Rocks. Cole Eakins denied 45 scoring attempts in the Potsdam net.

Friday, Feb. 1, Massena 4, Canton 6 -- With the game tied at 2-all in the middle period, hosts Canton scored the next three goals to take over the bout. Robert Southwick scored twice for Massena and assisted twice. Ryan Letham and Chris Paige each scored once. Nick Morrell and Nick Linstad had single assists. Casey Hooper denied 41 scoring attempts. Jack Finnerty (two goals, three assists) and Sam Martin (three goals, once assist) paced Canton. Hayden Todd made 21 saves.

Thursday, Jan. 31, Massena 53, Potsdam 33 -- The hosts Lady Red Raiders got out to a 26-15 halftime lead returned to the court for a 17-4 third-quarter run. Aryssa Hopps led with nine points. Laylah Bingham had eight points and six rebounds. Nova LeGrow and Octavia Viskovich scored eight points each. Tisha Benedict, Tori Jacobs and Tsiakoseriio David had four points apiece. Hayleigh Armstrong, with five steals, and Shaylena Mandigo each nailed a three-pointer. Rhea Bautista and Megan Eddy scored two points each. Luca Pecora tallied nine points and eight rebounds to lead the Potsdam offense.

Friday, Feb. 1, Salmon River 49, St. Lawrence Central 66 -- SLC jumped ahead with a 25-4 run in the first quarter. Clayton Jones scored 12 points, Rarennenhawi Cook-Francis 10, Dylan Beam nine, Gregory Burdash eight, Cayden Sunday four and two each from PJ Ghostlaw, David Laughing and Bronson Sunday. Matt Burg led SLC with a game-high 20 points.

Thursday, Jan. 31, Salmon River 18, SLC 53 -- Hosts St. Lawrence scored 20 unanswered points in the first quarter and never looked back. Jill Benedict paced the Shamrocks with eight points. Kamea Thomas scored six, Kahnekahawi three and Jheri White one. Maggi Yando scored a game-high 18 points for SLC.

Wednesday, Jan. 30, Salmon River 33, Chateaugay 41 -- Salmon River pulled ahead by one point after the opening eight minutes, but the Bulldogs outscored them 13-8 in the second and held on for victory. Jill Benedict and Kamea Thomas each scored nine points to pace the Shamrocks. Kahnekahawi scored six points, Annabelle Mitchell five, Marisa LaPage two and Jheri White another two. Jenny Jones from the Chateaugay squadron scored a game-high 16 points.

Wednesday, Jan. 30, Salmon River 4, SLC 2 -- The Shamrocks built a 2-0 lead after the opening frame and SLC tied the game early in the third period before Salmon River scored two unanswered goals for the win. Alex Oakes, Carter Benedict, Tim Cook and Dillon St. Ann-Spinner scored for Salmon. John Jacobs made 19 saves. “Character win for us after squandering the lead for sure. St. Lawrence has improved and will be a tough test for anyone come playoff time. We knew they would be ready to play,” Salmon River Coach Tim Cook said in an email following the game.

Monday, Jan. 28, Massena 7, Canton 3 -- At Massena Arena, the host Lady Red Raiders scored all the goals they would need with a 5-3 lead through the first two periods, following up with two unanswered goals in the final stanza. Meg Wilmshurst scored three goals and Hannah Chilton fired in two. Ella Oakes (one assist) and Katy Underwood scored the other goals. Kylie Letham and Mackenzie LaClair had one assist each. Mackenzie Garrow made 30 saves.

Saturday, Jan. 26., Massena 5, Potsdam 7: At Pine Street Arena, the Lady Sandstoners went ahead 6-2 before keeping Massena at bay. Ella Oakes scored twice. Hannah Chilton (one assist), Meg Wilmshurst (one assist) and Lindsey LaDue all scored solo markers. Sabella Cromie, Kylie Letham and Katy Underwood notched solo assists. Mackenzie Garrow made 22 saves. Alex Quinn paced Potsdam with a hat trick.

Saturday, Jan. 26, Massena 5, Canton 1 -- The Raiders on their home ice went out to a 3-1 lead after the middle frame then scored a pair of unanswered goals in the third. Nick Linstad (two assists), Michael Kuhn (one assist), Robert Southwick (one assist), Chris Paige (one assist) and Eddy Brown all scored once. Casey Hooper made 41 saves. Jack Finnerty scored for Canton. Hayden Todd made 26 saves.
