Massena boys snap four-game slide with win over Gouverneur

The Massena Raiders boys varsity basketball team turned around their recent fortunes with a 58-30 win over Gouverneur on Friday, Jan. 25.

Massena had been on a four-game skid prior to the victory. Tyler Bacon scored 14 points and Jacob Sheets 13 to pace Massena as they took control early in the game with an 18-7 first-quarter run. Chris McGregor scored six points, Ethan Firnstein five, Spencer Beckstead and Zack Goolden four each, Adam Peets and Alex Rusaw three each and two apiece from Zach LaBarge, Luke Greco and Ryan Herrick. For Gouverneur, Garrison Gonyea scored a game-high 19 points. Ty Reed scored six, Chris Monica and Jacob Link scored two each and Brock Cox made a free throw.

On Monday, Jan. 21, Massena fell 69-50 to Carthage at home, their second of two losses to the Comets within three days. Massena pulled off a narrow 14-13 lead after the first quarter but then fell behind after a 28-11 run from the Comets. Rusaw led Massena’s offense with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Bacon scored 12 points, along with seven caroms and four assists. Sheets scored eight points, McGregor five, LaBarge and Barney three each and Beckstead one. Carthage’s Jaden Kennedy scored 30 points, including making five of seven three-point attempts.

Two nights earlier, Massena and Carthage played with the Comets winning 61-37. Bacon led Massena with 11 points. McGregor scored seven, Alex Rusaw and Josh Sheets four each, and two points apiece from LaBarge, Barney, Hayden Amo and Goolden. Herrick netted a free throw.
