Morning Talk with Kaniehtiio Horn

Kaniehtiio Horn (Kahnawake) has done a lot of great things in her career, be it actress, model, or now a podcast host. She shows pride for her people and heritage as an Indigenous woman by sharing stories. With her new podcast "Coffee with My Ma", Kahntineta Horn, she talks to her mother about her long life and all the stories she has to share. From meeting Marlon Brando, to her activist undertakings through the '60s and '70s, to confronting a journalist at the Toronto Times about the lies he spread about her.

"It's the basic form of storytelling - our traditional way of passing down knowledge." Horn said on what her podcast is about "It's just the privilege of being invited to hear an elder two generations older speak."

Horn has been open to the idea of making a movie or writing a book about her mother's life or at least based on one aspect of her life.

"It's bloody hard to make a movie, it takes forever – but it's something I really want to do with the right amount of resources," Horn said.

With podcasting, she feels it's more natural and lets her mom talk about her life, adventures, and history from her perspective. Her mom, at first, wasn't sure what a podcast was and she was fairly neutral about the idea. Since then, she now loves the idea and is open to recording with her daughter and sharing her stories for anyone to listen.

Horn said that her mom trusts her and her judgment about which stories to share on the podcast. She also says that the podcast is very much a collaborative effort between herself and her mom.

"I send her my recordings to her before I put them online for her approval, I ask her if there is anything she wants to add or she'll tell me 'Oh block out that name' or 'We shouldn't say that' and such."

Horn explained about what goes in and what stays out of the podcast. Since the rise of podcasts has made it that much easier for people to create their own shows and share their stories.

Horn added, "Every family should have a biographer to keep track of all their stories."

Since they've started recording, it's allowed a lot of new opportunities for them to talk and laugh, and share their stories. Especially with listeners from all over the country and the world. Kaniehtiio Horn also expressed the idea of possibly bringing on other Elders on to the podcast for a special episode, she isn't sure when, but it is an idea for the future. There is also talk about possibly sharing listener's stories on the podcast or holding a contest for a special episode. While no plans are set, for now, she is more than happy to allow others to share their stories on her show.

In her 8th outing as an actress she was nominated for a Gemini Award for her role in the television film Moccasin Flats: Redemption. With 61 credits to her name, Horn has acted in several successful TV series: Letterkenny, The Man in the High Castle, The Detectives and most recently Northern Rescue. As well, Horn has several movie credits to her name: The Hummingbird Project, Tell Me I Love You, Wynter, 22 Chaser and most recently the movie, Adanata.
