Massena claims basketball wins over N-N, Malone; downs SL-LP, Victor, Malone in hockey

Massena came through with a number of impressive wins in hockey and basketball over opponents included Norwood-Norfolk, Malone, Saranac Lake-Lake Placid and Victor.

Tuesday, Jan. 15, Massena 65, Norwood-Norfolk 31 -- After leading 26-16 at the half, the Massena Lady Raiders basketball squadrom outscored N-N 28-6 in the third quarter and turned it into a decisive home victory over the Flyers. Nova LeGrow scored 20 points, including 11 in the third quarter. Octavia Viskovich scored 12 points, Tori Jacobs 10, Tsiakoseriio David and Hayleigh Armstrong five each, Layla Bingham four, Alayna Taraska, Rhea Bautista and Breanna Taraska each netted two and Shaylena Mandigo scored a free throw. Emma Schiavone led N-N with 12 points.

Wednesday, Jan. 16, Massena 51, Malone 38 -- After trailing early on by 10 points, Massena came back with a 12-0 rally in the final three minutes of the first half, including a buzzer-beating three pointer tossed in by Aryssa Hopps. Armstrong paced the offense for both sides with 13 points, including three from the three-point line. Bautista scored nine points, Bingham seven, David six, Hopps five, Jacobs four, Viskovich three and two each from Mandigo and LeGrow. Leah Gallagher led Malone with 11 points and nine boards.

Wednesday, Jan. 16, Massena 2, Saranac Lake-Lake Placid 1 -- After a 1-1 tie going into the second period, Meg Wilmshurst fired in her second of the game unassisted to lift the Lady Raiders to a win. Her opening goal came with assists from Katy Underwood and Hannah Chilton. Mackenzie Garrow stood tall in the net with 35 saves.

Friday, Jan. 18, Massena 41, Malone 71: Malone took a 17-6 lead over the Raiders boys basketball team after the opening stanza and never relinquished control of the bout. Tyler Bacon scored a game-high 21 points. Alex Rusaw scored eight points, Ryan Herrick five, Chris McGregor three and Ethan Barney and Josh Sheets two each. Cole Fountain led Malone with 18 points.

Tuesday, Jan. 15, Massena 24, Ogdensburg 42 -- Massena’s wrestling team lost the road game. They scored pins that included Brennin Snyder over Dylan Moran at 145 pounds, and Colden Hardy over Mitchell McCartney at 113 pounds. Preston Gunyup at 195 pounds and Ethan Donnelly at 126 pounds earned forfeits.

Wednesday, Jan. 16, Massena 19, Canton 48 - The wrestling loss happened on their home mats at Massena High School. Hardy earned a 12-0 decision over Brock Francis at 113 points. Ethan Plourde bested Chris Ladison 11-7 at 132 pounds. Bailey O’Leary at 195 pounds and Braden Simonds at 220 earned forfeits.

Saturday, Jan. 12, Massena 3, Victor 2 (OT) -- In boys hockey action, the teams swapped first-period power play goals and then markers at even strength in the middle stanza. Chris Paige scored the game-winner with 1:18 remaining in overtime. He also scored Massena’s opening goal on a play set up by Garrett Engstrom and Robbie Southwick. Cameron Frost scored Massena’s other goal.

Tuesday, Jan. 15, Massena 8, Franklin Academy 0 -- Massena scored the only goal they needed in the first period and went on to net two in the second and five in the closing frame. Michael Kuhn scored three goals with an assist. Southwick scored two goals with two assists. Paige scored two goals and assisted one play. Jack Campbell scored one goal. Engstrom tallied three assists. Casey Hooper made 14 saves. David Hutchison relieved him and turned aside seven shots. Matt Delisle made 35 saves for Malone. Jeremiah Scharf replaced him and made two.
