Salmon River boys, girls teams square off against Heuvelton, SLC, Malone, Hammond

The Salmon River Shamrocks boys basketball team squeezed out a win in the Gutterson Tournament at Heuvelton Central and returned to Franklin County to take a loss to Malone.

Meanwhile, the Lady ‘Rocks squadron has been thus far unable to claim a win.

The boys team lost to Malone 65-38 on Thursday, Jan. 3, their first game after returning from holiday break.

Their other games leading up to that included:

Saturday, Dec. 29, Heuvelton 66, Salmon River 48 - After trailing behind two points at halftime, Heuvelton rallied for 24 points in the third quarter and went on to take the tournament title. Greg Burdash and Hawi Francis led the Shamrocks with 11 points apiece and were named to the All-Tournament Team. Clayton Jones scored nine points.

Friday, Dec. 28, Salmon River 75, Hammond 64 - After trailing 21-18 in the first quarter, the Shamrocks regained their footing and led 35-33 at the half. They came back to score 24 points in the final eight minutes of the contest. Jones notched 31 points, including going 11-14 from the free throw line. Francis scored 11 points, including 5-6 on free throws. Burdash and Logan Lebehn each scored nine points. Cayden Sunday tallied eight. PJ Ghostlaw scored seven points.

Tues., Dec. 18, St. Lawrence Central 60, Salmon River 25 - SLC quickly took control of the game, fashioning a 32-10 halftime advantage and going on to outscore the Shamrocks 16-2 in the third stanza. Dylan Beam scored a team high seven points. LeBehn scored four. Jones, Toby Jacobs and Lane Oakes each scored three points. Burdash and Francis scored two each and Ghostlaw made a foul shot.

The Lady Shamrocks, despite a valiant effort from the entire team, have fallen in all of their recent games. They include:

Friday, Jan. 4, Franklin Academy 58, Salmon River 17 - Malone blasted out to a 19-2 lead after the first quarter, increased that to 30-8 at the half, and never looked back. Kamea Thomas led SRC with nine points. Kahnekahawi scored a three-point shot. Jillian Benedict and Meg Martin each scored a two-pointer. Jheri White made a free throw.

Tuesday, Dec. 18, St. Lawrence Central 50, Salmon River 12 - Benedict led Salmon River with four points, Sarah Tremblay scored three, Yanenowi Logan and Meg Martin two each and Thomas one.
