Massena boys, girls mostly victorious in nine recent games

The Massena Raiders boys and girls hockey teams have fared well in recent games, winning the majority of the nine games they’ve played combined over the last several weeks.

Friday, Jan. 4, Massena 5, Lancaster 2 - Massena led 2-0 after the first period, but gave up two goals in the second and fired in three in the third for the win. Matt Trimboli scored 1:39 into the game assisted by Robbie Southwick. Mike Kuhn scored Massena’s second goal, assisted by Aidan Rufa on a powerplay with 6:58 left in the opening frame. Breydon Dixon and Preston Schlager scored within five minutes of each other in the middle period. Chris Paige scored assisted by Trimboli on a power play 1:51 into the closing stanza. Nick Morrell scored Massena’s fourth at 5:54, assisted by Paige. And Southwick scored the final insurance goal with 5:19 left in the game, assisted by Kuhn. Casey Hooper made 21 saves for Massena. Josh Ruffner made 25 saves for Lancaster.

Saturday, Dec. 29, Canisius 3, Massena 2 - Massena lost the championship round of the Brothers Cup at CBA-Albany. The Raiders were blanked in the first period, tied the game in the second, and gave up the game-winner in the third. Paige and Kuhn scored for Massena. Hooper made 22 saves and was named tournament MVP.

Saturday, Dec. 29 - Massena 4, North Rockland 0 - Eddy Brown scored the only goal Massena needed in the opening round of the Brothers Cup tourney. Paige and Morrell set up the play. Kuhn scored twice and Paige once. Hooper made 17 saves.

Wednesday, Dec. 19, Massena 9, St. Lawrence Central 2 - Brown (two goals), Morrell (two goals, three assists), Paige (one goal, two assists), Kuhn (two goals), Cameron Frost (one goal) and Jack Campbell (one goal) scored for Massena. Caleb D’Arienzo had two assists. Solo helpers came from Nick Linstad, Rufa and Southwick. Hooper stood tall in the net with 26 saves.

Saturday, Dec. 22, Potsdam 10, Massena 3 - Massena’s Kylie Letham scored the opening goal at 6:09 on a play set up by Lindsey LaDue, but Potsdam came back with seven goals before the Lady Raiders would manage their next. Letham went on to score a second time. Gabrielle Puente accounted for the other Massena goal. Emma Kormanyos, Meg Wilmshurst and Mackenzie LaClair had single assists. Mackenzie Garrow made 34 saves.

Friday, Dec. 21 - Saranac Lake-Lake Placid 3, Massena 2 - Massena worked up to a 2-1 lead through the first two stanzas before giving up two key goals in the third. Ella Oakes and Puente scored for the Raiders. Letham and Julia Blair fashioned assists. Garrow made 32 saves.

Wednesday, Dec. 19, Massena 6, Canton 3 - Katy Underwood led the Massena offense with two goals and an assist. Hannah Chilton (one assist), Puente, Letham and Lindsey LaDue all scored solo markers. Emily Oakes had three helpers. Wilmshurst had two assists. Garrow made 20 saves.

Monday, Dec. 17, Massena 6, Alexandra Bay 5 - Letham scored the game-winning goal with 9:10 left on the clock, finishing a play set up by Blair. Chilton scored two goals with a helper. Underwood scored the opening goal. Wilmshurst and LaDue had one assist each. Garrow made 16 saves.
