Massena, Salmon River hockey teams have mixed showings in road, tournament games

Massena and Salmon River had mixed results in tournaments and road games over the week of Dec. 10.

After falling behind 2-1 in the first period on Friday, Dec. 14, Salmon River girls hockey team recovered with three unanswered goals and went on to beat hosts Alexandria Bay 4-2. Hannah Johnson paced the Shamrocks offense with two goals. Emma Ransom and Karli St. Ann also scored. Myranda Collette had two helpers. Kayla Cunningham, Brycelan Sunday, Rylee Garrow and Alexis Seymour had one assist each. Carli Cartier made 12 saves in the net. Lydia Cantwell and Renzi Youngs each scored for A-Bay. Elly Gamble assisted both plays. Jenna Christopher turned aside 40 shots.

Both Salmon River and Massena didn’t fare well in weekend tournaments.

Salmon River lost 3-1 to Williamsville East in a tourney they hosted at Fort Covington and were downed by Queensbury the following day.

In the Friday, Dec. 14 Williamsville game, Tim Cook scored for Salmon with an assist from Jalen Cook. Preston Hemlock posted a 23-save performance. Liam Wojciechowski, Mike Wolf and Dylan Smith scored for W-E. Aidan Wojciechowski turned aside 36 shots.

“Didn’t get the breaks tonight. Liam Wojciechowski was tremendous. Solid effort. We hope to bounce back tomorrow,” Salmon River Coach Tim Cook said in an email.

They didn’t bounce back, and lost 3-2 to Queensbury on Saturday, Dec. 15. Statistics were not immediately available.

In a girls hockey tournament in St. Albans, Vt., Massena lost to Essex and Bellows Free Academy.

In the Essex game, played Friday, Dec. 14, the final score was 8-1. Meg Wilmshurst scored for Massena 16 seconds into the middle stanza on a play set up by Jessica Amo. Mackenzie Garrow made 14 saves. For Essex, Abby Robbins scored four times with an assist. Olivia Miller-Johnson scored twice with two helpers. Sophie Forcier made 14 saves. The following day, Massena fell to Bellows Free Academy 6-1.

In a boys hockey tournament in Rochester, Massena lost to McQuaid on Dec. 15 and bounced back the following day. The McQuaid contest ended in a 7-1 loss for the Raiders. Nick Linstad scored for Massena 7:44 into the game with a helper from Michael Kuhn. Casey Hooper made 27 saves. For McQuaid, Zach Allen and Jeevan Deol (one assist) scored two goals each. Connor Fitzpatrick scored once. Tim Brown scored once with two assists. Dave Battisti made 18 saves. The following day, Massena avenged their loss with a 3-2 win over Pittsford.

In other recent games, the Salmon River girls blanked Beekmantown and the SRC boys lost to Ithaca.

The Lady Shamrocks win was at Chazy on Friday, Dec. 7 by a 3-0 final tally. Rylee Garrow scored what would hold up as the game winner, on a play set up by Myranda Collette, 5:58 into the second period. Garrow would go on the score an insurance goal in the third period, unassisted. Kayla Cunningham, assisted by Emma Ransom, punched in the second insurance marker late in the closing stanza. Cartier made 20 saves. Brianne Knight turned aside 34 shots for Beekmantown.

The next night, the Salmon River boys lost 3-2 to Ithaca. Cameron Cartier tied the game 1-1 with 1:09 left in the opening period. Jared Showen made the game tied 2-all in the second period. John Jacobs made 21 saves for the ‘Rocks.
