Kawehno:ke Recreation Center - Around Christmas time, when its blistering cold outside and the roads are slick, it's good for a community to come together for some great food, family, and maybe a visit from Santa. Thanks to both the Mohawk Government and Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Chiefs, they served a large turkey dinner with freshly made hash, stuffing, and plenty of sides and festive desserts for families to enjoy. When entering the Kawehno:ke Recreation Center they were met with friendly members of MCA encouraging community members to enter a raffle for either a Grinch-themed gift basket, a chance to win a $100 dollar gift card to Walmart or an RCA Voyager III. Santa also made a special stop for children to get their photo taken with; siblings, babies, and small children excitedly hugged Santa as he sat in front of an faux indoor open fire.

Inside the Center the large hall was full of friends and families eating the food that had been prepared by Minnie Leaf's daughters for the community. Food was served by all three MCA District Chiefs and Grand Chief Abram Benedict with help from Kawehno:ke volunteers.

When asked about the importance of this event, one community member had this to say "It's just nice to see the community come together like this for one big dinner."

Showing just how important this event is to strengthen community ties and for those who might need a little pick me up at this time of year.

Kana:takon held their community dinner on Monday, December 10 and the next community dinner will be held on Thursday, December 20th at the Tsi Snaihne Recreation Center from 5pm-7pm. Mark your calendars!
