Massena wrestlers play season opener against Malone

The Massena Central varsity wrestling team opened their 2018-19 season with a 39-21 loss to hosts Franklin Academy on Monday, Dec. 3.

The meet opened at the 132-pound weight class. Malone earned a pinfall win from Lucas Martin, which they followed with a 6-1 decision in favor of Izaiah Robideau, giving them an early 9-0 lead.

Massena’s Mac LaPage produced Massena’s first victory of the night, a 10-6 decision over Nick Horner.

Malone answered with four consecutive wins, including a forfeit victory by Alfred MacNeill at 170 pounds. Alexzander Boyea (152 pounds) in 23 seconds pinned Massena’s Maria Rodriguez. Thomas Trombley then took a close 6-5 decision over Zachery Stowell in the 160-pound bout. MacNeill’s forfeit win gave Malone a 24-3 lead, with Jered Mulverhill (182 pounds) then adding three points to that after pinning Steven Derushia in 2:58.

The Raiders’ Preston Guynup (195 pounds) pinned Malone’s Devyn Dear in 1:30. That was followed by two consecutive forfeit wins for Massena, bringing the score up to 30-21 but still in favor of Malone.

After a pair of double forfeits at 99 and 106 pounds, Malone came through with two wins from Alexander Recore at 113 pounds, by pin in 2:28, and Nathan Recore by 6-4 decision.

Massena’s Rocco Ferriero won by forfeit at 126 pounds for a 39-27 final tally.
