TAUNY Holiday Open House 12/1 - Gingerbread, Seasonal Treats, and Festive Activities

TAUNY's Annual Holiday Open House brings the holiday spirit to life with the Sugar & Spice Gingerbread Contest and Display, seasonal delectables, live music, kids' activities, and fun for the whole family. The Open House will be held at The TAUNY Center in Canton on Saturday, December 1st from 10:00 am-2:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public.

The Sugar & Spice Gingerbread Contest and Display, one of TAUNY's most popular programs, has been a TAUNY tradition since 2002. The theme for this year's competition is a reprisal of a popular theme from the past with an additional layer -- "Myths and Fairy Tales." The Gingerbread Display will open at The TAUNY Center on December 1st. The Gingerbread Contest will take place that day and will include the following categories: Adult (ages 18+), Youth (12-17 with no adult help), Children (under 12 with minimal adult help), Family/Mixed-Age/Community Group, and People's Choice. Gingerbread Houses made by individuals and/or groups can be dropped off at The TAUNY Center November 19th through November 27th. More information about the gingerbread contest can be found at tauny.org.

This year's Holiday Open House will have a variety of fun, seasonal activities for the entire family. Kids (of all ages!) can visit with Adirondack Santa (10:30 am-noon) and do make-and-take crafts, including winter-inspired creations with Nature Up North. There will also be live music by the Madstop Fiddlers, Rod Fraser and Kim Young of the Fraser Family, and other local performers; holiday cooking demonstrations; and seasonal treats and beverages being served throughout the day.

Open House guests will also have the opportunity to shop in The North Country Folkstore that day and purchase new, locally-made items in the Folkstore Holiday Showcase. The North Country Folkstore will feature specials on select items during the Open House.

The day of the Open House is the second (and final) pickup day for pre-ordered holiday balsam wreaths. A limited number of additional wreaths will also be available for sale in the Folkstore that day. These beautiful wreaths are crafted by North Country Heritage Award recipient, herbalist, and florist Jane Desotelle of Underwood Herbs in Plattsburgh, using materials found in her own gardens. The final deadline to order wreaths is Saturday, November 24th. Orders can be placed online at tauny.org/shop, over the phone (315-386-4289), or at The TAUNY Center.

The 2018 Sugar & Spice contest and display and the Holiday Open House are supported by underwriting from Stewart's Shops with additional support from Nature's Storehouse.

The TAUNY Center and North Country Folkstore are located at 53 Main Street, Downtown Canton, NY.
