LOUIS D. JACOBS JR.

HOGANSBURG - Louis D. Jacobs Jr., 86, of 378 State Route 37, passed away Monday evening, August 27, 2018 at The Alice Center in Malone, where he had been a resident since February 2018.

Louis was born August 19, 1932 in Hogansburg, son of the late Louis Daniel and Beatrice Deer Jacobs. He attended Mohawk Schools and graduated from Bombay High School. He later attended Mater Dei College for Alcohol and Chemical Dependency Studies. In 1950 he enlisted in the US NAVY and then the US Air Force and proudly served until he was honorably discharged in 1964. Louis continued to serve in the Army Reserves for six more years. He was married to LeeAnne McCartney, with whom he shared four sons. He then married Bettie Moulton.

In his early years, Louis worked as a lineman, working from Michigan to California and all along the west coast. He then worked for Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation out of Potsdam as a Meter Reader until his retirement. Not one to sit idle, he became a Drug and Alcohol Counselor for the North country Council on Alcoholism after retirement. Louis was a strong advocate for A.A. and remained very active for many years.

Louis was a member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion, where he enjoyed acting as their historian in later years, and a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits Group. As a youth, Louis was an active participant with the Akwesasne Boys Club and remembered fondly spending much time at Ray Fadden's Six Nations Indian Museum at Onchiota, NY. He enjoyed woodworking, and didn't spend a lot of time with hobbies, but rather took great joy in working and helping others. Most of all, Louis always enjoyed spending time with his Grandchildren.

Louis is survived by his wife Bettie; three sons Louis Douglas Jacobs of Akwesasne; Dana Michael and Monica Jacobs of Queensbury, NY; and John David Jacobs and his companion Margaret Diagastino of Akwesasne; one step son, Theodore Miner of Wheatland, CA; eight grandchildren Lisa Marie Sierra, Teddy Nevarez, Keira Jacobs, Maggie Jacobs, Gabe Jacobs, Rayne Jacobs, Meadow Jacobs, and Remington Jacobs; and several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by four sisters Dolores Thompson, Darlene and Peter Sunday, and Denise Jacobs, all of Akwesasne; and Dale Bintz of Massena; two brothers David Jacobs and Daniel and Debra Jacobs, all of Akwesasne.

In addition to his parents, Louis was predeceased by a son William D. Jacobs on August 5, 1975; and a step daughter, Elizabeth Ann Navarez in 2008.
