Call-Out for Board Members:

The Akwesasne Cultural Center Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the Akwesasne Museum will be branching off to create a new organization. Ionkhiswanòn:nas, a steering committee comprised of representatives from the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, Mohawk Council of Chiefs, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Akwesasne Cultural Center Board, and Akwesasne Museum Advisory Committee have outlined the purpose of the new organization and drafted a mission and vision statement.

The immediate tasks for this volunteer founding board will be: naming the new organization, developing articles of incorporation and bylaws, incorporating the new organization, and developing a strategic plan.

The long term tasks for the board will be: to develop the organization’s projects and budget, develop the human resource and financial infrastructure, and secure funding.

Community members with a passion for language and culture, plus experience with non-profit organizations, are asked to submit a letter of interest to Glory Cole by June 30th at 4:00 p.m. at the Akwesasne Cultural Center 321 State Route 37.

Purpose of the Organization:

We are working towards a facility where Akwesasrónon of all ages and backgrounds can access information on Akwesasne’s history, language, culture, genealogy, archaeology, and arts and crafts. Networking with councils and community organizations ensures broad representation, perspectives, and participation. Objects and documents are properly presented, exhibited, stored, documented, and cared for by trained community members in a state of the art facility that is designed with culturally responsive architecture, using current best practices and standards for collections care and environmental stewardship. Outdoor space for training and practice of culturally related land-based skills is available. Donations of artifacts are made possible with policies on acceptable items and plenty of proper storage and exhibit space. Tourists and community members alike are welcomed and attracted by a variety of interactive and visually appealing exhibits and activities. Funding streams include revenue from a quality and culturally relevant shop, admissions fees, grants, charitable donations, and support from community and beyond.

Mission:

Our organization is a center of knowledge and understanding on Akwesasne Mohawk history and culture; expressed through dynamic exhibits, through interactive programming and activities, and as an archival source of our collective history and material culture.

Vision:

Our organization is a thriving center of knowledge on all facets of Akwesasne Mohawk history and culture; providing programming, resources, and opportunities for dialogue and experiences.
