Massena Lady Raiders take Section 10 title, eliminated in state playoffs
The Massena Lady Raiders varsity lacrosse season came to an end in state playoffs, but not before earning the 2018 Section 10 title.
In the sectional championship, played May 29 on the Potsdam High School turf field, Massena won by a single goal. With the score tied 8-8 with just under four minutes to go, Meg Wilmshurst passed to Claire Tyo, who fired in what held up as the game-winning marker.
Massena reeled off three goals in the first 6:45, two from Julia Blair interrupted by a singleton from Aryssa Hopps. They traded goals through the second half. While down 8-7, Canton’s Hannah Stevenson fired in her fifth goal of the game for the 8-8 tie.
Lady Raiders goaltender Gisele Todd posted a stalwart 15-save effort. Paige Glasgow turned aside eight shots for Canton.
Regardless of the outcome of the game, both teams earned spots in the NYSPHAA playoffs, with Massena facing Jamesville-DeWitt and Canton going against South Jefferson, both from Section 3.
Massena returned to the Potsdam High turf to face J-D two days later, but they proved to be overwhelming opponents. After building a 10-4 lead in the first half, they fired off eight goals unanswered in the second half on the way to an 18-4 final score.
Blair scored two goals. Hopps and Abigail Johnson netted singletons. Cayla Hinkley assisted two plays. Skyler Constantino started off in the net and made five saves. Todd relieved her and denied seven scoring chances. For J-D, Riley Burns scored four goals with an assist. Lindsay MacLachlan scored three goals and two each came from Riley LaTray and Katie Lutz.
The Lady Raiders end 2018 with a 15-3 overall record. J-D advanced to play Section 4 champs Vestal in quarterfinals.
