Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Offers Fuel Attendant Safety Trainings to SRMT Licensed Retail Petroleum Licensees

Throughout the month of May the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Office of Economic Development and Compliance Department coordinated safety trainings for Licensees. Trainings included fuel station safety measures, emergency prevention, emergency preparedness and emergency response for over 60 fuel attendants, cashiers and owners.

"It had been about 20 years since training of this kind was offered to our gas stations and was long overdue since our local firefighters have responded to fire calls at these businesses," said Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Safety Officer Adrian McDonald.

McDonald and the Office of Economic Development Support Officer Leona Francis organized the two-hour safety training for fuel attendants at the following gas stations:

East End Convenience

Twinleaf Gas – Fort Covington and Akwesasne

AK Gas

Kastowah Gas

Truckstop #9

Bears Den – East, West and Main locations

Big Boys Gas

Red Fox Gas

SRMT Safety Officer Adrian McDonald covered safety topics such as fuel station operations, safety, and emergency preparedness. He also went over fire safety topics such as static electricity and fire extinguisher use. Gas station staff and owners were greatly appreciative of the training. As a local firefighter Adrian had experience responding to fire calls at a few local gas stations and the training participants enjoyed his real life examples and education on the importance of safety.

"Akwesasne Retail Petroleum stations are very unique in that we have full service stations rather than the self-service stations you'd find located throughout most of United States. We commend the licensees that participated in this formal training and education to safely understand proper preparedness to a number of emergency scenarios such as leaks, spills, and fires," SRMT Compliance Director Elliott Lazore.

Congratulations to the 60 participants that participated and have been awarded certificates for completion of the safety trainings offered to local retail petroleum stations and the SRMT commends the support by business owners in allowing the staff to partake in such a valuable safety training.
