Life Skills on the Land Teachings – Bob Stevenson
After 26 years working on Thompson Island, Bob Stevenson has moved on to teaching Indigenous cultural teachings to school, colleges, and universities. Stevenson is also available for conferences and workshops and most importantly and most dear to his heart – youth camps.
Thompson Island started with a bare bones existence with several old homestead buildings and just $6000. 00 to work with. Over the years, Thompson Island received funds from Proceeds of Crime, Saint Regis Tribal Council, Akwesasne Cultural Restoration Program, SRMT Environment Division and most recently the Akwesasne Community Trust Fund; enabling Thompson Island to be built into a compound hosting the Multi Sports Camp, the Akwesasne Freedom School, Medicine Walks, and the Thompson Island Cultural Camp among other events and activities.
Now, Stevenson can be found in local and regional schools sharing his cultural knowledge. Stevenson has also been approached by the Fort McMurray and Kainai First Nations in Alberta, as well as the Catholic School Board to provide Aboriginal cultural teachings.
