ROBERT R. THOMPSON

 

AKWESASNE – Mr. Robert R. Thompson, 78, of State Road, passed away Tuesday morning, February 20, 2018 at Community General Hospital, Syracuse after a lengthy illness.

Robert was born May 21, 1939 in Hogansburg, the son of the late Richard and Mary (Cook) Thompson and attended St. Regis Mohawk School and graduated from Salmon River Central School. On April 1, 1960, he entered the US Army, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge on March 18, 1963.

Robert was an ironworker with Local 440 for many years until his retirement. He was an active member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479 and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Robert is survived by his sisters, Grace Roundpoint of Kawehnoke and Katherine Thompson of Akwesasne; his brother, Joseph and Carol Ann Thompson of Kawehnoke; his longtime companion, Hilda Herne; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Laura Cree on November 16, 2017; and two brothers, Stewart Thompson on August 20, 1997 and Clarence G. Thompson on December 22, 1991.

Friends called on Monday at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena. Due to the ice jams and flooding of St. Regis Road, his funeral service was held at the funeral home on Monday with Rev. Tojo Chacko officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the parish cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice.
