Shamrocks basketball teams to compete for Class B banners; hockey team wins two as regular season nears end

The Salmon River boys and girls basketball teams closed out their 2017-18 regular seasons and the boys hockey squad picked up two wins as they skate toward their regular season closer this week.

On Feb. 9 at Tom Cavanaugh Arena, the Shamrocks earned a 3-2 win over visiting Clarence. After a stalemate first period, the teams swapped markers in the middle frame before Tim Cook fired in the game-winner 1:06 into the closing stanza. Cameron Cartier and Kaden Conners earned assists on the play. Jacob Cook scored the other Shamrock goals. Tehakwirakarenrons McDonald fashioned a pair of assists. Single assists came from Kenan Herne and Gage King-Gorman. John Jacobs turned aside 23 shots on goal. Two nights earlier, Salmon River downed hosts Ogdensburg Free Academy at the Golden Dome 5-1. SRC scored three times unanswered in the first period. Jacob Cook scored twice, with the other goals coming off the sticks of Matt Harvey, Kaden Conners and Cameron Cartier. Dylan St. Ann-Spinner tallied two assists. Cartier, Harvey and Tim Cook assisted single plays. John Jacobs made 25 saves. Isaac Testani scored for OFA, in the second period, assisted by Jared Barr. Kelson Hooper had 20 saves.

The Lady Shamrocks basketball team closed their regular season with losses to Malone, Gouverneur and Colton-Pierrepont. On Feb. 5, they fell 40-21 to hosts Franklin Academy. Jillian Benedict scored eight points, Dava Thompson six and Bailey White, Yanenowi Logan and Kamea Thomas two each. Wahsontiio netted a free throw. Madison Ansari paced FA with 10 points. Three nights later, Gouverneur bested SRC 53-18 at home. Thompson scored nine points, Benedict four, Thomas two and Wahsontiio three. Elaine Porter led Gouverneur with 15 points. The next night, the squadron closed their regular season with a loss to Colton-Pierrepont at home. The Lady Colts outscored 4-0 in the opening 8 minutes and led 19-7 at the half. Benedict led the Lady Shamrocks with nine points, Thompson seven, Wahsontiio six and Thomas a free throw. Salmon River will advance to compete in the Class B tournament as the lowest seed.

The boys team beat Malone by a single basket but then lost to St. Lawrence Central. On Feb. 6, the Shamrocks won 56-54 over FA at home. Ben Kelly led all players with 26 points. Jared Bigness nailed 10 points, Hunter Ghostlaw eight, Montana Cook six and two each from Devin Snyder, Blaze Benedict and PJ Ghostlaw. Payton Poirer led Malone with 20 points. Two nights later, the St. Lawrence Central Larries beat the Shamrocks 50-39 at home. Kelly scored 15 points, Hunter Ghostlaw and Clayton Jones five each, Bigness four and Cook three. They will advance to compete in the Section 10 Class B tournament.
