Massena boys and girls wrap up regular season with chance to win Class A titles; boys hockey team beats Icemen, Pelham

The Massena boys and girls basketball regular seasons have come to a close with each team getting a chance to compete for Section 10 Class A crowns. Meanwhile, the boys hockey team went 2-1 over the course of a week as their regular calendar winds down.

The girls basketball team are slated to play Malone on Feb. 19 at SUNY Potsdam for their class banner. Leading up to that, they defeated Ogdensburg and Brasher, but fell to Canton. On Feb. 5, they won 59-34 over OFA at home. They led 10-9 after the opening quarter and went on to outscore their opponents 20-8 in the second stanza. Nova LeGrow paced the Lady Raiders with 13 points. Bailey Trumble, who netted three from the three-point line, scored 11 points, as did Sydnee Carroll. Paige Perry scored 10 points, Alyssa Eubank six, Hannah Greco four and two each from Lexis Jacobs and Al'lainya Dumas. OFA's Chelsey Raven was their leading scorer with 12 points. The following night, the Lady Raiders were victorious over hosts St. Lawrence Central by a 64-44 final score. On Feb. 8, they lost to hosts Canton 68-54. Eubank paced Massena with 12 points. Octavia Viskovich scored 11 points, Perry 10, LeGrow seven and Skyler Trumble three. Sarah Sieminski on the Canton side led all players with 28 points.

The boys varsity basketball team will also compete for the Section 10 Class A title on Feb. 19 at SUNY Potsdam. On Feb. 6, they lost 82-37 to Ogdensburg Free Academy. Massena's Kaleb Miller led their scoresheet with seven points. Alex Rusaw scored six points, Zack LaBarge five, Josh Sheets and Tyler McDonald four each, Kamren Lebire three and Chris McGregor, Tyler Bacon, Spencer Beckstead and Gage Moody two each. OFA's Cale Sargent led all scorers with 25 points. Three nights later, Massena fell 61-31. Bacon led the Raiders with 11 points. McDonald, Sheets and Rusaw each scored five points, Beckstead three and McGregor two. Declan Porter led Canton with 26 points.

The boys hockey team had a decent week with wins over Norwood-Norfolk and breaking even in their tournament the weekend of Feb. 9 and 10. On Feb. 7, they beat hosts N-N 5-2. With the Icemen leading 2-1 going into the second period, Massena connected for four goals in less than six minutes to capture the game. Jake Amo, Josh Underwood, Chris Paige, Cameron Frost and Logan Chilton accounted for Massena's notches on the scoreboard. Sam Chilton fashioned two assists, and solo helpers were contributed by Robert Southwick, Nick Linstad, Adam Barney and Matt Derouchie. Nate Moffit covered the Massena crease for 22 saves. N-N goals came off the sticks of Reed Gravlin and Ty Cotter. Bodie Molnar assisted Gravlin's goal. Thomas Caferella turned aside 26 shots. Two nights later, Massena was shut out by St. Joseph's in a tournament at Massena Arena. James Grable scored the only goal St. Joe's needed. Moffitt stood tall in the Massena net for 36 saves. Brett Weppner (15 saves) and Trevor Galante (two saves) split goalie detail for the competition. Massena got redemption the following afternoon with a 5-0 win over Pelham.
