Keep the Conversation Going:

Sekon, Hello:

Last month, January, I went to court because of an elderly Mohawk and his much younger non-native girlfriend. It’s not one of the greatest moments in my life but I’m ok.

Because there are no policies, or guidelines set in place, he along with many others take advantage and bring their girlfriends and boyfriends to our reservation. The point is, however, if a Mohawk elder takes advantage then others won’t care and do the same. Many already have.

I spoke with my Aunt last year. She told me in the early 2000’s she was a member of a group that did the legwork, completed the paperwork and when they were ready to submit the final forms for referendum to the tribal officials at the time, it was stopped. No explanation given. Why?

A tribal employee did mention in this month’s monthly meeting that they are hiring a consultant out of SUNY Potsdam to develop criteria, conduct surveys on line and in the mail and then (hopefully) resulting in a Referendum.

You can mock me and insult my intelligence but it’s not about me, is it? It’s about those of you who take advantage of our Reservation. I said it before and I say it again. “This is the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, native peoples. Not natives and others.”

Niawen, Thank you

Lou Ann Paquin
