In the spirit of unity and fairness for First Nations people across Canada, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne sends this message of support to the family of Colten Boushie.

Akwesasne stands with you in your fight for justice. We send this message of hope and strength to your family and the Red Pheasant First Nation. Colten will not be forgotten.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne believes that justice has not prevailed in this case and we call upon the Government of Canada to walk their talk and make improvements. You cannot continue to allow unnecessary tragedies, at the expense of First Nations people, to occur. The Government of Canada has the authority to make changes to the existing justice system so that First Nations people are no longer disproportionately represented in prison populations and so that crimes committed against First Nations people are properly prosecuted and no longer treated as acceptable. These improvements are a necessity of true reconciliation.

We honour the memory of Colten Boushie and remain hopeful that a better future is ahead for the next seven generations.
