Another Flying Head Story

Submitted By John Kahionhes Fadden

A long time ago, when Flying Heads were more common, one zoomed into a Kanien'kehaka village looking for something to eat. As was sensible, the people scattered into the woods. The Head couldn't maneuver that well in the forest, and the people escaped injury. However, one woman with a baby in a cradleboard didn't hear the commotion. Suddenly, the Creature was very close. She started to run, but it was too late, and so she abruptly slowed to a normal walk. With fear in her heart she kept her cool. This move startled the Head. Casually, while clutching the cradleboard tightly, the woman wandered into a nearby barkhouse. This move, again, threw off the Flying Head...he was use to people running away from him. He too went into the barkhouse and hovered close to the woman. Calmly, the woman bent down close to the fire, and with a forked stick she pushed stones into the fire. The Head knew that humans treat their food with fire and he thought, "Hmmm, maybe that's something to eat." He waited. The woman, after the stones had heated somewhat, reached into the fire with the forked stick and picked up a stone. She brought it up to her mouth. She deftly passed it aside but to the Flying Head's poor close-up eyesight, it looked like she ate it. "A-ha! It is something to eat," he thought, as he quickly scooped up a bunch of the stones and dropped them down his throat. As the searing pain ripped through his senses a thought also quickly flashed through his mind, "She must be powerful to eat these things!" He spit out the stones and without a glance at her screamed out of the barkhouse looking for a cool body of water. The woman, with a smile on her face, left the barkhouse with her baby.
