On October 11th, the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club held a special event just for the Girls of Akwesasne. Since 2012 October 11th, has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges that girls face all over the world. Events held on October 11th promote empowerment and the fulfillment of the human rights that girls are entitled to.

Akwesasne held its first Day of the Girl event at the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club, the event was organized by the Seven Dancers Coalition, Three Sisters Program and Wholistic Health. The event started off a meditation session held by Arisawe Lazore followed by a talk by Alicia Herne about Self Love. The young ladies were able to create their very own medicine pouches, which they wore proudly once they were finished. Hannah Lee from Planned Parenthood ended the event off with a talk about abstinence and consent.

The event was aimed toward girls ages 12 and over. The girls were given goodie bags at the end of the event with brochures and booklets with information about the topics covered throughout the event. They also got to go home with a new journal and a few books. This was the first event of its kind, with plans of doing more events just for girls in the future.
