MARGARET M. THOMPSON "Iewennanorehs"

AKWESASNE – After a courageous battle with cancer, Mrs. Margaret M. "Margie" Thompson, 74, entered the Spirit World in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 20, 2017 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Iewennanorehs, meaning Her Words Are Precious, Wolf Clan, was born September 30, 1942 on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island), the daughter of Evelyn Day Jocko and the late Thomas Jocko. She attended schools on Kawehno:ke and in Cornwall. In November 1958, she married Harvey P. Thompson at the St. Regis Catholic Church.

Margie worked in Syracuse for many years. She was an assembler for Carrier and Rockwell and also worked at the Syracuse Hotel. She was active with the North American Indian Club and was very fluent in the Mohawk language – teaching the language to many. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, and was a very loving woman who worried and cared for others before caring for herself.

Margie is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, Harvey; her children, Jerome (Deloris) Thompson of Onondaga, Harvey Thompson, Jr. (Teioswathe Cook) of Akwesasne, Ramona (Jerome) Shenandoah of Akwesasne, and Veronica Thompson of Akwesasne; 17 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and her mother, Evelyn Jocko of Akwesasne.

In addition to her father, Iewennanorehs was predeceased by a son, Rodney Jerome Thompson on October 30, 1980, and her brother, Raymond Day.

Friends called at the Sit-N-Bull Pavilion from Monday to Wednesday. Her funeral ceremony was held Wednesday at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse. Burial followed in the Solomon Road Cemetery, Akwesasne.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where memories and condolences may be made online at http://www.donaldsonfh.com.
