This community is being asked to go to the polls on December 3rd to approve a payment of $200.00 monthly to our Seniors.

Now there is a great deal of misinformation being circulated against this proposal, such as statements that our Tribe cannot afford it and that such payments will affect existing programs. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Monies are available. They are just not being prudently used. The Tribal Council has consistently failed to consult with our community when spending proceeds from our gaming enterprise. Upwards of $30 million is being spent on the now defunct IGA. That total continues to grow as we are responsible for the upkeep of that property, even though the County now claims title to the land. Mohawk Networks now owes the Tribe almost $8 million borrowed dollars, and the end is not in sight.

There was a check cut without knowledge or approval for a Soy investment in the amount of $3.5 million. This action was in violation of the Tribal Procedures Act. Additionally there was a purchase of off reservation swampland on Factory Road for $1.6 million.

We were told that we are to live with the $19 million we get from the gaming revenues. But did you know the Tribal Council has access to a “savings” account that is non-reportable?

Until the Council becomes more transparent and reportable to the Tribe, we should help those in our tribe who worked so hard to build these profitable gaming revenues being so freely spent.

Remember, our seniors are the people that initiated and fought for what is now a successful gaming industry in our community; the original Mohawk Bingo Palace, and the Casino Resort.

Our Seniors need your support. A little money to that section of our population can mean so much. And the monies ARE out there, and will not detract from other programs. Not if what we have is spent wisely.

Thank you and remember to vote on December 3rd.

Philip Tarbell
