Last Week Today in Massena Sports
The Massena varsity football team suffered their first loss of the 2016 season, while the volleyball team continued their undefeated streak with three more wins. The girl’s soccer team came out victorious in their match of the week and the boy’s squadron dropped two contests.
Football
On Oct. 8 at Watertown High School, the gridmen fell 51-10 to East-Syracuse Minoa. Cedric Maurer threw 32 yards to Nate Bressard for the only Massena touchdown. Merrick Taraska booted a 25-yard field goal.
For ES-M, Greg Buck ran 107 yards and scored three touchdowns.
Volleyball
The volleyball squadron are five wins away from a two-season undefeated streak. They haven’t lost a game since 2014.
On Friday, Oct. 7, they bested Malone 3-0 (25-6, 25-21 and 25-14). Tianna Back had 18 service points and three kills. Tatum LaFrance served up 11 points with 11 assists. Alyssa Eubank had seven service points and five kills. Mckenzee Lazore had five kills and six assists. Jenna Tarbell and Brittany Condon each served six points. Octavia Viskovich served 10 points.
Two nights earlier, the girls beat Madrid-Waddington 3-0 (25-8, 25-10 and 25-16). LaFrance and Back each logged 13 service points. Eubank fashioned four kills and four blocks. Lazore had six kills and seven assists. Gabby Durant had three kills and two blocks.
On Oct. 3, they won over Ogdensburg 3-1, 17-25, 25-15, 25-18 and 25-21.
Tarbell served up 13 points with 10 digs. Lazore (six kills) and LaFrance (11 kills) each served seven points with two blocks. Back and Eubank (nine kills, five blocks) each served six points. Condon had 17 service points and four kills. Durant had four kills and two blocks. Cayla Hinkley, a setter back from an injury at the beginning of the season had what Coach Maggie Farrell described as “a great night” with 16 assists.
“It was a true team effort,” Farrell said via email.
Soccer
Also on Oct. 7, the girls soccer team won 3-1 over hosts Brushton-Moira. B-M scored their only goal in the 17th minute. Madison Rowe capitalized off of a penalty kick.
With just under four minutes in the first half, Massena’s Savanah Arney took a pass from Maddie Mailhot and tied the competition. Kyrsten Stone scored the first of two second-half insurance goals, assisted by Arney, who scored the final goal with an assist from Stone.
Mikenna Merry denied nine scoring attempts for Massena. B-M’s Felicity Bilow (12 saves) and Bailey Rabideau (four saves) split goalkeeper detail.
The boys soccer team was defeated twice in as many matches on Oct. 3 and 6. They lost to Canton 2-1, with their only goal from Lorenzo Tosoni in the first half. Casey Hooper made nine saves.
Three nights later, they fell 1-0 to Gouverneur in overtime.
