Puppies

Who can resist a tiny ball of fur? I know it is difficult to do but keep in mind that a puppy requires lots of care and time. Here is a list to keep in mind when you are bringing that puppy home:

• Vaccinations. Puppies require a set of vaccines that need to be given at the ages of 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks and 16 weeks of age. Breeders usually take the pup to the vet for deworming and the first "puppy shots" at 6 weeks of age. It is up to the new owner to go back to the veterinarian every 3-4 weeks for booster vaccinations, or the puppy will not be adequately protected from diseases and will be susceptible to parvo and/or distemper.

• You should also get your puppy started on preventive care for diseases such as heartworm disease or flea and tick medication. You should never use over the counter medications; they cannot be trusted.

• Proper nutrition. You should always feed a high quality diet to your new puppy.

• Crate training. I highly recommend that you get your puppy a crate to sleep in. This also is a good way to start housebreaking your new pup.

• Toys. Puppies love to chew; this is how dogs explore the world. You should be prepared to purchase various types of toys to see which ones your puppy prefers.

• Spaying and neutering. This is costly. It is very important to have your dog spayed or neutered to help control unwanted litter, decrease roaming in male dogs and to prevent cancers in your pet. Start saving your money now, surgery cost is determined by the weight of your dog. This can be discussed when you take your pup to the vet for his/her second booster vaccinations appointment.

• Enrolling your puppy at 7 weeks of age in a puppy training class. These classes help you to train your pet. The most important time for dogs to learn is 7-12 weeks of age.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when considering getting a puppy. Keeping your pet healthy, including behavioral health, is the way to responsible pet ownership.
