The Iroquois Museum Announces Call for Native American Veteran Self-Portraits

The Iroquois Museum (Howes Cave, NY) invites women veterans to participate in “A Soldier’s Heart, A Sister’s Hands: Haudenosaunee Women Veterans” exhibit. The exhibit will highlight the contributions and diversity of Iroquois women veterans, will open on October 9 and run through Nov 30, 2016. All ages, branches of the service, and MOS are welcome. If you are a Haudenosaunee female veteran or currently serving your voice is welcome and needed.

We are seeking “self portraits,” created either individually or in collaboration with family, friends and/or fellow veterans. Participants do not need to be artists and the “portraits” do not need to be elaborate unless you feel you would like to create something more complex. A photograph that speaks to your role in the family or community perhaps. Nor do they need to be literal physical representations. These “portraits” can be informal, include other people, photography, words, clothing, beadwork, military uniform components, mixed media, collage, letters, documents, (even “selfies”) that speak to your experience and identity as Native, a woman, and/or a veteran.

The Museum will cover insurance and shipping on work produced for the exhibit. The exhibit will be featured from Oct 9 to Nov 30 with a reception on Oct 22. We are hoping to have the portraits/expressions on site by Sept 16 to allow time for installation.
