2ND EDITION OF AKWESASNE: A CULTURAL PORTRAIT PUBLISHED

TERRITORY OF AKWESASNE - The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne's Communication Unit is proud to inform the community that Akwesasne: A Cultural Portrait has just been reprinted for a 2nd Edition. This magazine-style publication was first printed as part of a Cultural Agreement between the Secretariat aux affaires autochones Quebec, Culture et Communications Quebec, CRE Vallee-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. In the updated version, four new pages were incorporated featuring additional components of Akwesasne culture, and many new full-color photographs were added as well.

The publication gives an easy-to-read overview of Mohawk history and traditions and the vibrant culture of Akwesasne. It covers many important areas of Akwesasne life and livelihood, from the traditional clothing to the fine skills of beaders and basketmakers, and from the history of carefully woven lacrosse sticks to the summary of Haudenosaunee clans, songs, and dance. Although this publication is not all-encompassing (this would be very difficult to do in one publication), it does cover the core components of Mohawk culture. The first edition received widespread praise, especially from educators who had struggled to find one resource for teaching Mohawk and Haudenosaunee culture to students.

Akwesasne: A Cultural Portrait is available on the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne's website http://www.akwesasne.ca. If you would like to request a free hard copy, please contact Shannon Roundpoint, Communications Unit Program Manager at 613-575-2348 ext. 2210 or email Shannon.roundpoint@akwesasne.ca. The publication is also available at the Akwesasne Library and at MCA's Mohawk Government Building #1 (former G&L buildings) on 3rd Street in the village of Kana:takon.

A special thank you is extended to the Entewatathawi/Nation Building Program for sponsoring this 2nd edition printing.

Akwesasne: A Cultural Portrait is for educational purposes only and is not for sale.
