MARLENE N. GARROW

 

AKWESASNE – Marlene N. Garrow, age 76, 296 State Route 37, passed away Monday morning, August 25, 2014 at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, Plattsburgh, NY, where she had been admitted ten days ago.  She had been in failing health the past several years.

Marlene was born June 20, 1938 in St. Regis, Quebec, to the late Joe M. and Theresa Smoke Terrance.  She was educated at Salmon River Central School, and later took classes at Potsdam State University.  She married Leonard V. Garrow on December 31, 1955 at the Massena Center Methodist Parsonage, with Rev. William Master officiating.  Leonard predeceased her on March 25, 2005.

Marlene trained as a nurse, and she taught the Mohawk language at Twin Rivers and Massena Central Schools and then upon her retirement returned back to nursing.  She was a member of the Hogansburg Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #1479 Auxiliary, and the St. Regis Mohawk Seniors.  She was an avid golfer, and she loved all children, but especially her grandchildren, and always enjoyed the time she spent with them.


She is survived by her three children, Bryan and Brenda Garrow, Akwesasne; Marshall and Kathy Garrow, Stony Creek; and Mark and Jennifer Garrow, Akwesasne; two grandchildren, Leonard and Jolene Garrow; two sisters, Isabel E. McDonald, Akwesasne; and Mae T. Revette, Syracuse; her brother Michael and Nancy Terrance, Syracuse; and several nieces and nephews.

Marlene was predeceased by her brother Leonard T. Terrance on August 23, 1974.

Friends called Tuesday and Wednesday at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.  Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Hogansburg Methodist Church, with Rev. David Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at the Pine Meadow Cemetery, Akwesasne.

Memorial contributions may be made in Marlene's memory to the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.
