To the Community,

I had the good fortune to win a 9’ kayak at the Akwesasne Winter Carnival this year. Not being a swimmer or a kayaker, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it come summer. I was so happy to read in the Indian Time about Kanikonhr’i:io i:wa ne Ona’:ke, the new paddling club organized by Rob White, Jordan Tarbell and Dana Skye. I was able to bring my kayak (and wobbly knees!) to the St. Regis Rec. Center for my first foray.

First, we had the all-important lesson on boating safety and emergency equipment. Then we all went out in big canoes so I could get a feel for the water and the motion of paddling. What fun! I couldn’t wait to get back to the shore and take my kayak on a solo outing along the shoreline.

The paddling club meets twice a week at difference locations (posted in Indian Time). Extra canoes and life jackets are available to adults and children. It’s fun, free and very soothing to the mind. I would encourage Akwesasronon to give it a try!
