A Voice from the Eastern Door
April 7, 2014
Dear Editor,
She:kon. I am writing in reference to a response that I received from an employee of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe following the publication of a recent letter to the editor submission to Indian Time.
Following publication of the letter I was informed that the unnamed employee suffered a family tragedy. At no time was my offered opinion intended to demean the employee’s family or make light of their family member(s) circumstances.
The usage of the phrase “give them more rope” is rooted in historical times. Today, the use of that phrase might employ oversight or direct supervision of staff, as one definition. My use of that term was restricted to that implication. I regret that any other interpretations may have been alleged from my published opinions. I also hope that the tribal employee so affected accepts that as a sincere statement.
These words are freely offered and my last on the original subject matter. Sken:nen.
