AMPS EXECUTES WARRANT ON CORNWALL ISLAND

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act warrant on a Cornwall Island residence this past Saturday (April 5, 2014) seizing a large sum of cash, a firearm and items believed to be used for trafficking prescription pills.

At approximately 7:00 AM, both uniformed police and investigation team members entered into the residence to execute the search warrant that was the result of a long-term investigation that lasted over one year. One person was arrested during the search by the police and transported to the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Station for processing on related drug charges.

Two people have been formally charged as of this morning at the Cornwall Provincial Court; Darlene Benedict 49 and Roy Benedict 51, both of Akwesasne have been formally charged with Possession of a schedule 1 controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substance Act. In addition, both have also been charged with Criminal Code charges of careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of proceeds above $5000 obtained by crime.

Detective Sergeant Kariwate Mitchell said that this investigation was lengthy and challenging but would not reveal any further information. “This file took up a lot of time and manpower, I can’t discuss the details of the investigation,” said Mitchell; as according to police, the information of this investigation has been sealed from public access.

There was some cooperation by outside law enforcement but according to Police Chief Jerry Swamp, his agency carried the lead in this investigation. “We received intelligence and assistance from other agencies that we work with regularly,” said Chief Swamp.
