RC Racing in Akwesasne – Start Your Engines!

Cory Mier stops by to check out the races and the guys let him use their racecar to really get in on the action.

Besides sharing the same bloodline and family ties, two cousins share a passion for Remote Control racing, so much so they started a new club that runs every Sunday. Taylor Barnes and Wilbur “Junior” Barnes and Junior’s son Brandon, created the “Mohawk RC Raceway” which runs every Sunday from 1pm until 5pm. They are located at the old IGA parking lot, across from the Casino.

Taylor Barnes with his RC racecar, some cars can go as fast as 55 mph.

Children and adults, experienced racers, beginners and people who have never raced, are welcome to join at no cost to race their remote control race cars. Tents are set up to help keep you comfortable in the sun. Repairs to RC cars can be made on the spot with Taylor or Junior since they have every tool available to make your car faster. It’s hard to believe how fast these RC cars can go and just like NASCAR they have updated their look similar to Late Models. Others are replicas of Dirt Car Racing Modified’s or EDM’s. It is a truly exciting and fun activity that is perfect for families looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon. Admission is free to watch or race your car. In the future they hope to offer a concession stand with all the regulars (hot dogs, hamburgers and soda) but with a healthy kick offering veggies and dip, and sugar free treats and drinks.
