Akwesasne Territory -- May 9, 2013 - Florencio Verdugo of Hogansburg, NY, was arrested by the Tribal Police after responding to a possible drunk driver on State Route 37. Upon observing the vehicle traveling westbound with no headlights on, tribal officers attempted to stop the vehicle on St. Regis Rd.  The vehicle failed to stop for officers and fled into the Canadian side of the territory. Tribal officers shortly thereafter observed the same vehicle travel back and forth from the American side of the territory to the Canadian side of the territory through Andrew Johnson Rd. The vehicle after colliding with an AMPS patrol vehicle was then chased to McGee Rd where Mr. Verdugo resisted arrest and was pepper sprayed, then taken into custody. At the station Mr. Verdugo exposed his private parts to officers while in custody. Tribal officers then arraigned Mr. Verdugo on numerous vehicle and traffic law violations including DWI where he was observed to have a BAC of .10, along with felony criminal mischief, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, reckless driving, public lewdness and resisting arrest. Mr. Verdugo was remanded to the Franklin County Jail on $10,000 bail and $20,000 bond.

May 9, 2013 - Tribal police arrested a juvenile male for criminal mischief in the 4th degree. The young male is scheduled to appear in town court at a later date.

May 10, 2013 - Brian A. Snyder of Malone, NY was arrested by tribal police for aggravated unlicensed operation in the 3rd degree.  Mr. Snyder was charged after he was stopped for obstructed view and following too closely. Mr. Snyder is scheduled to appear in Town court at a later date.

SPEEDING

Massena, NY - Monica A. Montoya, 44, of Hogansburg was ticketed by Massena Village police for speed in zone following traffic stop at 11:01 am Thursday on the Willow Street Extension.

UNLAWFUL POSSESSION

Canton, NY - Adam Ortiz, 27, of Rooseveltown, was charged by Canton-based state police with unlawful possession of marijuana following a traffic stop at 10:46 p.m. Tuesday on East Main Street in the village of Canton.

SPEEDING

Massena, NY - Tobias J. Cook, 31, of Island Road, Akwesasne, was ticketed by Massena Village police for speed in zone at 9:05 a.m. Sunday following a traffic stop on Route 37.

MAY TRAFFIC ACTION PLAN

Cornwall, ON- The Cornwall Community Police Service’s Traffic Action Plan for the month of May will be bicycle safety.  The target of the enforcement will be:

·         cyclists on the sidewalk.

·         cyclists not wearing a proper helmet.

·         cyclists not having a bell.

·         cyclists not having lights.

 No person above the age of 12 years shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk.  If you are found riding your bicycle on the sidewalk, and are over the age of 12, it will cost you $55.00.

  A person driving a bicycle upon a roadway shall:

drive near the right-hand side of the roadway.

exercise care and caution when passing a parked, stopped or standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction.

A person driving a bicycle upon a roadway designated for one-way traffic shall :

drive near the right-hand or left-hand side of the roadway.

exercise care and caution when passing a parked, stopped or standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction.

A person driving a bicycle upon a roadway shall:

wear a proper helmet if under the age of 18.

be equipped with a proper bell and lighting system.
