On Friday, August 31, a retirement party was held for four home health aides who’ve retired over the last year. The afternoon party was marked with speeches by Jann Day, Mary Grow, and Annette Fleury, thanking each of the retirees for the hard work and the impact they had on the lives of the people they cared for.

The retirees- Hilda Herne, Mary Parent, Sheila Stone and Brenda Gorrow - have a combined 84 years of service in Akwesasne.

Herne, Parent, Stone, and Gorrow, were recognized with an award, a $50 Walmart gift card, and an array of kind words. Following the recognition and award, everyone was treated to finger foods, cookies, pie and cake. It was a lovely party and all the retirees were extremely thankful for the party.

Hilda Herne, who worked primarily in Trout River, Malone, and Ft. Covington said, “I’m retired, I’m gardening, and I am playing Scrabble, and eating out at Bears Den.” After 28 years on the job, Herne seems to be a good example of a rolling stone gathering no moss.

Mary Parent, who retired after 25 years worked out of Ft. Covington, Bombay, and Hogansburg primarily. Parent, who hails from Prince Edward Island said, “Oh just enjoying life, being happy, and being home with my grandchildren and my husband,” when asked about what she was going to do now that she was retired. Parent met her husband Gerald and married in the area in 1971, as he was from here. Parent wanted to add that she “really enjoyed my work here, and it really made my life happy.”

Brenda Gorrow retired after 9 years on the job to take care of an ailing parent. Gorrow said, “This has been great working down here, everyone has been so nice. I met a lot of nice people and had lots of fun too!”

Sheila Stone worked mainly in Hogansburg for the last 10 years, but worked for 22 years altogether. When asked what Stone plans to do in her retirement she said, “I’m going to enjoy it!”

May they all enjoy their collective retirements. Congratulations ladies!
