Student Submission

The Career and Development Program is a summer program run by the Akwesasne Area Management Board. These articles are by some students there, and were submitted by Melissa Mader.

Tashawna Francis & Kyrsha Angus

At the Careers and Development Program a recent class has been added, which is Culture. Culture teaches us how to do social dances and songs. It’s very fun to just socialize with everybody in Mohawk and learn more about our culture. Today we went outside and said the opening, like we do every day. It is a great class for some that may not be around their culture and language, so by coming to this program and taking Culture it gives us the opportunity to be who we are as Native Americans.

Serena Hall & Iastha Porters

In the Career and Development Program, we are enjoying the Mohawk Culture class that instructor Paul Thomas teaches. It is interesting because we learn the social dances, songs, and the meaning to them; Paul is trying to get us to say the Kariwatekwen without using our papers. We hope to never forget what we learn so we can help pass our knowledge down to the next generations.

Isaiah Smoke & Austin Cummings

The best part of program is the Coordinator’s Sports Academy. It is the best class because every day we play dodge ball, kickball, basketball, and various other sports. Injuries are minor but common; but still the best way to describe the class is EPIC! All the students are very competitive and because every week is different it keeps people really interested.

In the Summer Career and Development Program we have Cooking class and the person who teaches us is Melissa Mader. In class we first learn about a country and then go shopping for Ingredients for our dish. Last week we learned About Austria and made Austrian crepes (they are a thinner version of pancakes) which we had ice cream and chocolate with… YUM!

In Ancient History we made mummies out of Barbie dolls. It was very fun considering we had to cut off all her (or him if it was a Ken doll) golden locks, and then wrap her in sticky newspaper. We also get to make a tomb for our mummies. With all the information we are learning about Pharaohs we are now fascinated with Ancient Egypt.
