Haudenosaunee Confederacy News

• The meeting scheduled for Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse was cancelled because one of the Condoled Leaders was at the gathering in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

• The Haudenosaunee Peace and trade Committee was scheduled for Thursday, March 1, 2012 then a condoled Clanmother passed away and the meeting was cancelled. No date has been selected for the next Peace and Trade meeting.

• This past weekend, March 9th to 11th the Haudenosaunee leadership participated in the Native American Indigenous People’s Caucus that was hosted by the Chiefs of Ontario. There were approximately 100 people (leadership and friends/supporters) who attended the caucus.

The Chiefs of Ontario promoted and showcased young Native adults. The young people were active in the daily activities of the Caucus. According to an attendee it was good to see young people have Administrative tasks and to be involved as they are the future leadership.

Oren Lyons, a Haudenosaunee representative, presented a paper on the Doctrine of Discovery. This was presented as an intervention, which means the paper will become a part of the report of the Caucuses. The Doctrine of Discovery paper does include the concept of domination. Domination by the dominant society – the non-native population. This is a significant point of view.

Also mentioned was the non-implementation of articles 9, 33 and 36 by Canada. Article 9 and 33 refer to citizenship and membership and article 36 refers to Border Rights- these issues have been presented to the Permanent Forum in previous years.

The rapporteur is Steve Newcomb who is quite knowledgeable about the Haudenosaunee and the Haudenosaunee issues. A repertoire is responsible for writing the report to be submitted to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous People at the United Nations (NYC) from May 3rd to May 17th, 2012.

• See you next week.
