In 2009, a book titled “A Lily Among Thorns. The Mohawk Repatriation of Kateri Tekakwit:tha” was published by the Wampum Chronicles and Darren Bonaparte is the author. 

It’s 274 pages long and includes historical photographs.  R. Kakwirakeron Montour created the drawings in the book that depict Kateri and her family.

The author’s critical view of historical documents helps readers to understand that religion and fur trade were not the only reasons that so many moved from their Mohawk Valley homeland to the banks of the St. Lawrence River.  This is the first book that provides a perspective from an author that is also from the same nation as Kateri Tekakwitha.

I’ve only read about half of the book so far and the historical information is fascinating because it provides a view that was not available to me with mainstream education in the past.  I highly suggest this book for anyone that is planning to go on the trip to Rome to witness the Canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha, when she becomes the first Native American Saint this October.  You can order a copy of the book by visiting the Wampum Chronicle website or phoning (613) 575-9985
