Older siblings encourage younger ones to participate in the social

The Tsi Snaihne School held their annual community meal followed by their Harvest Social yesterday with an open invitation to parents and the entire community to participate in the event. 47 different family members contributed to the meal this year and many parents stayed to help set up and break down in preparation of the social. Even the Akwesasne Freedom School classes made the trip to Tsi Snaihne to participate in the day’s events.

“Our children really enjoy having the chance to share a meal with their parents at school,” said Tsi Snaihne School Principal Lynda Brown. “The Akwesasne Freedom School usually attends our socials and they do a lot of activities throughout the year with our Skawatsira Program.”

The Skawatsira Program is a Mohawk Immersion program within the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education School district and includes grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 4. A few of the graduates from this program move on into the Akwesasne Freedom School to continue with their Mohawk Language education and have the chance to visit their previous school on visits like this.

“Our kids here host the social and do all of the announcing for the songs,” said Kaweienonni Peters who is the Kanien’keha Curriculum Specialist. “Our culture has to be here in the schools. The Skawatsira Program is different from other programs where they teach language and culture, but here culture is taught through the language and a lot of other schools are changing to that mindset.”

The next activity at the Tsi Snaihne School will be on October 28 with the Parent/Teacher Halloween Movie night from 5:00pm-7:00pm. There will be a free movie screening with free pizza, popcorn and treats along with the Skawatsira Program’s annual Haunted House who will be charging $0.50 to enter. Other events that will be open to the community will be during November; on November 9 the early years science fair with the theme of ‘space’ and then on November 10 with the Veterans breakfast. For more information on any of these activities contact the school directly at 613-575-2291.
