MBP donates school supplies to Mohawk School

The Mohawk Bingo Palace took up a collection of school supplies this year, donating over 1,000 pieces to the St. Regis Mohawk School. The collection of supplies took place over the course of a two-month period from July 1-September 1, 2011 with patrons from the Palace. The promotion allowed for the exchange of a $4 bingo card each day for one school supply.

“Every year we do this promotion for the Mountain of Toys event with free cards in exchange for toys,” said Bingo Manager Brenda Johnston. “This was the same thought but with back to school supplies and we can run it each year.”

“Initially this was a great way to support the community, especially the kids,” said Mohawk Bingo Palace General Manager Michael Garrow. “The quality of the supplies donated is really good, it shows the seriousness that our patrons took with this promotion.”

A few of the patrons donating supplies didn’t even take the free cards. Once the end date of the promotion rolled around Johnston made the call to the St. Regis Mohawk School to inform them of the donation being made.

“I’m happy the community comes out and supports the school,” said St. Regis Mohawk School Principal Sharlee Thomas. “Donations like these help to make our kids be more successful.”

All of the school supplies donated will be sorted and divided up into each classroom. With the creation of a new middle school within the Salmon River Central School District the St. Regis Mohawk School now houses students in Pre-K through Grade 5. The enrollment at the start of the 2011/2012 school year at the school was 405 students between those grades.

“A huge ‘thank you’ goes out to everyone for this donation from the St. Regis Mohawk School Principal and students,” said Thomas. “That’s what we are really here for, to make sure that our kids are happy, healthy, educated and successful.”
