Julia A. Curleyhead

 

AKWESASNE – Mrs. Julia A.Curleyhead, age 90, of Tsiionkwanonso:te, Cornwall Island Long Term Care Facility, passed away on Friday evening, August 12, 2011 at the nursing home where she had been residing since 2008. In December 2003, she entered Iakhihsohtha, Snye Home for the Elderly.

Julia was born February 20, 1921 in Akwesasne, the daughter of Josephine Seymour and Jake Martin. She attended the convent schools in Hogansburg. On January 9, 1941, she married Alfred Tarbell Curleyhead at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael K. Jacobs, SJ, officiating. He predeceased her on April 7, 2003.

She was a homemaker who was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a fair person who loved sewing, quilting, gardening, and enjoyed dancing when she was younger. She and her late husband, Alfred, enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. She was a caregiver to many family members, especially her husband’s aunt, Charlotte Curleyhead for 16 years and she also loved babies, having cared for Woody when he was small. She not only cared for people, she cared for many animals that were gathered around her home. Julia preferred to do things the “old fashioned” way and was a devout Catholic, being a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church.

Julia is survived by her three grandchildren, Mary “Lee” and Quinn Lazore, Christine “Diane” and Phillip Lazore; and Robert Curleyhead, all of Akwesasne; five great grandchildren, Elwood, Calandra, Detwin, Kelby, and Mylee; and her chosen sister, Margaret Ransom. She is also survived by her god daughter, Brenda LaFrance and a godson, Alfred Bryan Laffin; and special friends, Lois Terrance and Sakakohe Pembleton.

She was predeceased by her son, Alfred “Freddie” Curleyhead on February 10, 2001 and her chosen brothers, Louie Lazore, Francis Laughing, and Joe David.

Friends called starting Monday, August 17, 2011 at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated om Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jack L. Downs, celebrating. Burial will follow in Kateri Cemetery, Akwesasne.
