Health & Safety Bulletin - Stay off the ice

Prepared by MCA Emergency Measures

Over the past week, Environment Canada forecast normal winter temperatures accompanied by rain. This weather has caused river levels to rise from increased runoff. Since water levels are currently below normal for this time of year, flooding is not a concern at this point in time. However, with the rain comes melting snow and ice. Please remain off the ice bridge, especially under these conditions.

Residents (children, snowmobilers, ice fisherman, etc.) are advised to stay off ice covered rivers, as the fluctuating temperatures have weakened ice cover.

Akwesasne residents are asked to exercise caution and ensure children are supervised near a watercourse and explain the dangers associated with unsafe ice, increasing flows, and slippery banks.

Should temperatures continue to fluctuate, there’s always a potential for danger on the river and the roads. Please drive safely. Please dress accordingly to the weather as it fluctuates. PLEASE refrain from using the ice bridge. This bulletin serves as a general safety notice to the Akwesasne community.
