In memory of a great friend and cousin of mine

In memory of a great friend and cousin of mine.

Mark was a good man, dedicated to his family and this community. He was always there for his family and friends, visiting, cooking, organizing reunions and helping out at celebrations or wakes. He was always sharing stories of growing up and his life adventures. Every conversation would turn hilarious by his embellishing on the story with bragging, boasting and exaggeration. Forget about telling him a secret, he was ace at blackmail! And I saw how he cared for both his parents and many relatives as they left this world.

Mark was hilarious. He was sunshine on a cloudy day. Many times we would just break out in a dance when a good song came on the radio, or we would be crying because we laughed so hard. But we also shared many tears of sadness. We were able to console each other.

He loved to cook and generally had no problem sharing his inventions, which he named, along with the jar or container. We’d go many miles out of our way to find a good restaurant; we would talk and laugh for hours.

He was an excellent boss, (or so we let him believe). He made sure work was a fun place to be, never taking advantage of his position or staff. His babies were Akwesasne Notes and Indian Time. He cared about his staff of many friends, standing up for them against the many conflicts and turmoil we faced.

He served on many boards and committees, always with the nation and community in his heart. He could make things happen. He had many connections.

He surrounded himself with many friends and family. He cared deeply for his brother and sister, his nephew and nieces, and all his relatives and neighbors. A favorite story of mine is one time him and my Aunt Elda had a weight loss contest between them, well, it wasn’t long before Mark got a delicious pie delivered to him and he sent her a cake!

I am so fortunate to have known Mark, my friend forever.

Deb
