Letter to the editor,
Should Canada Customs be allowed on Cornwall Island, Mohawk Territory? I say No! The Canadian customs intends to expand the facility, like the U.S. Customs. This will take more Indian land. Remember the Jay Treaty? When the Mohawk people were told the border didn’t apply to Mohawks, just white people. Don’t kid yourself, Canada and the U.S. believe they own the Mohawk reservation. Why else would the border end up splitting the reservation in half.
All Mohawk people must resist any infringement on our land. It’s not about guns or convenience on the bridge. Its about convincing Canada and the U.S. that we own the land and we intend to keep it.
