Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Conservation Department pulled two vehicles from the St. Lawrence River near Kana:takon last month where they had been since winter.

Throughout the ice season, many vehicles are left on the frozen river for various reasons. Owners of the vehicles face fines for pollution if their car isn’t immediately removed, but sometimes the vehicle owners are unknown. Several cars remained in the water throughout the winter and spring. The two cars removed by MCA last month had been marked by fluorescent orange buoys so boaters were aware of their presence just below the surface of the water.
