Arthur T. Lamendola

 

MASSENA - Mr. Arthur T. “Artie” Lamendola, 76, of 121 Center Street, passed away on Monday afternoon, May 18, 2009 at Massena Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past few years.

He was born August 27, 1932 in Massena, the son of Andrew and Charlotte Lazore Lamendola. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Massena High School in 1951. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

Artie was self employed in the construction business for many years. He also worked as a mechanic for the Lamendola Bus Company. He also was a supervisor in the construction of HUD Homes in Elmira after the flood of 1972. In addition, he owned the The Office Bar and Restaurant on Center Street, for many years. He also worked as the maintenance man for OTB in Massena. Artie was elected to the Massena Volunteer Fire Department on April 10, 1957, where he served as Fire Chief from 1981-1982. On July 10, 1989, after 32 years of service, he resigned and became a member of the Massena Exempt Firemen Association. He was a member of the Gerald R. Roy Amvets Post #4, Earl J. Santimaw VFW Post #1143, American Legion Post #79, and the Moose Lodge #1110. He was an avid boxer in his youth and enjoyed sitting on his porch watching the traffic and visiting. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

Artie is survived by 2 daughters, Gayle Morse, Albany; Nicki and Gordon Belt, Copake, NY; 2 grandchildren, Katherine and Amanda; 2 sisters, Janet Moniere, Wilson Hill; Betty Lamendola, Massena; a brother, Anthony Ray Lamendola, Syracuse; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brother, Sam Lamendola on July 1, 1980 and a sister, Ruth Hemlock on April 29, 1985.

Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Friday 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
