Akwesasne Soaring Eagles wraps season with banquet and awards
The Akwesasne Soaring Eagles Awards banquet was held on Saturday, April 18th, at the St. Regis Recreation, which hosted 175 people to a traditional meal prepared by Soaring Elder Janet Tatro. A music & video photo flash back was prepared by Craig Mari and presented by 94.7 FMHITS and Special Guest Soaring Eagles role models in attendance 2002-03 Chelsea Sunday, 2005-06 Chantel Francis and 2008-09 Ciera Jacobs.
Master of Ceremonies was Kahnastasti Jacobs who expressed that all role models are chosen for their enormous contribution to the sport of volleyball inside the club and for their continuation in playing the sport of volleyball in college and university.
“It was a wonderful feeling when Chelsey, Ciera & Chantal walked in,” Jacobs said. They gave her the opportunity to proudly introduce them as they returned to speak to our young members about their experiences with the club, and they agreed that the Soaring Eagles club was a very organized and well developed volleyball club. They also said their Thank you to the club for developing and guiding them to higher levels of play to be able to qualify as a member on university & college teams. Their return to speak to our young volleyball players is truly an inspiration to convince our youth that they should pursue their dreams to higher levels of playing the sport of volleyball.
Clarissa Jacobs, head referee, spoke on the development of Inter-district volleyball in our community and how it brought out many old and new players from each district in various age groups. Jacobs also expressed the importance of being committed to being consistent at attending games on time only makes the league more successful. She also remembers the time when she played volleyball and most of her teammates are still playing. She said “I am inspired by the ones that continue to play the sport of volleyball, age is not factor in this sport, it is motivation.”
One of Clarissa’s duties was to chose and hand out Inter-district awards to the Ladies league in the categories of Most Valuable player, Most Improved, Most Determined, Sportsmanship, best defensive & offensive player. Those awards were:

According to Kahnstastsi Jacobs one of the most important awards is to give recognition to the people that go out of their way to make the club a safe, beneficial and effective place for all our members. During the banquet the Soaring Eagles Volunteer of the Year Award was also presented.
“We acknowledge and appreciate you for all your enthusiasm, energy, time and ambition to assist in creating a volleyball program for us, that gives us an experience and time of our life in the world of volleyball. You also participated consistently in accomplishing all the needed tasks to complete all our volleyball activities from fundraising, organizing, managing, setting up, cleaning up, and being there all the time. Your performance as a volunteer here in our club is cherished for all the things you do for us.” The recipients were Lisa Francis-Benedict, Quinlyn Jacobs and Spike Billie Jackson-King.
